Ana

As I walked home, my mood had improved dramatically from that morning. I’d actually found two stores hiring, as well as a job opening at the community college. Why I didn’t think to go online and peruse the employment opportunity column in the paper, I didn’t know. However, going door-to-door gave me a chance to meet the people who would possibly employ me and also those I could potentially be working with. I never wanted to find myself in a situation like I had with Bill. Despite the bitter cold, the walk around town had refreshed me. It had been a while since I’d really spent any time in the square without having a destination. My time alone there only reinforced my love of Saint’s Grove. I really couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

I was most excited about possibly working at the community college. An opening for a teaching assistant for a mythology professor had been available. I imagined immersing myself in the college atmosphere, but this time on the other end of the podium—the learning environment had always appealed to me.

That was the job I wanted and I walked home with my fingers crossed that I’d at least get an interview.

Kerby greeted me at the door. I found Dionysus lying on the couch with a washcloth over his head.

“What’s wrong with you?” I asked, concerned. “What happened?”

“Nothing, Ana Banana. I’m just feeling a little under the weather.”

It surprised me that a god could feel ill. “Anything I can do to help?”

Dionysus pulled off the wet rag and opened his arms to the sides. “You can come and give me a hug, love.”

I carefully lay on top of him, placing my cheek on his chest. As he wrapped his arms around me, we both sighed.

“You seem a little happier than you did this morning,” he murmured, then kissed the top of my head. “Did you find a job you’ll love?”

“I filled out a few applications. Hopefully something will come of it. Studying Greek Mythology in college really didn’t leave me a lot of job opportunities, but oddly enough, there is an opening for a teaching assistant in the Mythology department.”

“That’s exciting, Ana. But remember, if you hadn’t taken up studying mythology, we wouldn’t be here today. I can’t imagine such a catastrophe.”

He was right. My love of Greek Mythology had been an epic waste of time and money, but if I hadn’t uttered my gods’ names so many times, they never would have found me. They wouldn’t have come to me. I wouldn’t be happy, but the same miserable Ana who’d let everyone take advantage of me. If the altercation with Bill had happened even three months ago, I wouldn’t have been able to fight back. I may even have gone back to work after the assault, convinced that I’d somehow caused it.

But instead, I’d stood up for myself. I’d held my dignity. I’d put the fucker in his place—in a bloody mess on the floor.

I shut my eyes and concentrated on melting into Dionysus.
